2009 Medoc Progeny News
DECEMBER
Since leaving Zara Phillips, advanced event horse Red Baron has been following up on his initial success with Irish Junior rider, David Hannigan. They were 7th in the CCI* at Burgie in June, 3rd in the CIC* at the Ballincoola International Horse Trials at Glenealy and 5th in the Irish Junior European Team Trial at Tattersalls in August. Selected as part of the Irish Junior European Eventing team to compete at Waregum in Belgium in September they were placed 26th overall. With a clean sheet cross country and just four faults in the show jumping, their performance put them second best of the Irish.
Medoc progeny had a great day at Manor Grange Stud dressage competition in December. Westoak Mars was winner of the Prelim 13Q and 2nd equal in the Novice 30Q, while Imperial Crusader was 2nd in the Medium 71Q, by just 1%.
Mercurey and Amanda Edwards acheived a "9" for their walk pirouette and won both Medium classes at the Centaur Trust, Suffolk. Amanda trains with Paul Hayler and credits him with the improvement the pair have made recently.
NOVEMBER
Remember Me and Antonia Brown took both Novice classes at The College, Keysoe, Beds - see photo and write up in Horse & Hound p.50 (12.11.09). They led the Novice 25 with 76.4%, the highest score of the show, gaining a "nine" for both a medium canter and a give and re-take of the reins from judge Dr Roy Tipping. They then went on to head the Novice 30 qualifier on 71.15%. Remember Me is now qualified for the Novice Winter Regional Championships - congratulations on more excellent results!
Margaux and Kate Johnson had a double win at Willoughby with 72% - great percentage!
Joanna Brook & Imperial Crusader were winners of the Medium 71 class at Bishop Burton.
OCTOBER
Andrea Peel and her talented all rounder, Maateus who are on the Winter Qualification trail, picked up a Novice win and a 2nd at Port Royal EC, earning them a write-up in Horse & Hound. The pair have already qualified for the music classes at both novice and elementary. They have been affiliated for a year and also compete in Riding Club and Trailblazers.
SEPTEMBER
Y Matilda qualified for the Pet Plan finals, at Medium Open level, winning at Sheepgate on Sept 27th with a fabulous score of 68.8%. She has now qualified for the Winter Regionals too, at Medium Open level and for the Elementary/ Medium freestyles.
D'Artagnanne and Charlotte Uden collected third place, with just 2%
separating the top three, at the Wellington Area Festival.
MONTHLY DRESSAGE CLINCS WITH GERMAN TRAINER & INTERNATIONAL RIDER, ELKE FUNK-HESS
Once a month, Ravendale Stud hosts a 3 day dressage clinic with Elke Funk-Hess who travels from her home in Germany. Elke has successfully been teaching clinics across Europe since 2006. During her career she has competed in International Grand Prix competitions including CHI Berlin/Germany, Frauenfeld/Switzerland, Oslo and Drammen/Norway.
She is a First Riding Master (from Warendorf with Stensbeck-Auszeichnung) and holds the Master of Horses Diploma. She is also a riding instructor for the disabled, a recognized German National Dressage Federation instructor (DkThR) and a Therapeutic Riding Instructor with Master Social Science Grade.

was winner of Yearling In-hand Sport Horse at East of England Show '09 for owner Trish Nuttall
Our lovely broodmare Angel has had a double hit with two of her offspring winning classes reported in Horse & Hound this week (Sept 3rd 09 issue - pages 102 D'Artagnanne at Oldencraig and p.110 Michael Angelo at Burrows Court Farm).
D'Artagnanne (originally Divine) owned by Jane Mecz and currently ridden by
Charlotte Uden, a young showjumping specialist won two Novice classes at
Oldencraig . Charlotte has taken the ride this year as usual rider Sadie Ogden Penn, professional dressage rider, has just had a baby. Jane says "The judge really loved her that day, and called Charlotte over to find out more about our horse. And although H&H say this was her first win, she already has three or four 1st places and a number of 2nds, 3rds and 4ths from her earlier tries. She has a lovely temperament and balanced movement. We are also jumping her and plan to compete in some combined training classes this winter".
Michael Angelo and owner/ rider, Karen Beddows, secured their ticket in the Pet Plan Novice Qualifier at Burrows Court with 69.41% in a class of 16 competitors, fulfilling Karen's dream of winning a sash! Congratulations to both horses.
Overstones Matisse is currently owned by Viv Thompson and ridden by Piggy French, who writes on her web site she thinks him very talented with a bright future. His recent impressive results include 1st in the Intermediate with a double clear at Aston le Walls, 1st in the Intermediate with another double clear at Knaptoft International and 3rd in the CCI* at Houghton International. Fitlings Mirabelle and Jackie Fisher have had a summer of success, including
1st and 2nd in Novice classes at Sheepgate in July. They continued their
winning form at the Horse World Equestrian Centre taking 1st in the Novice
Open Qualifier with 71.38% and 1st in the Novice Open 72.26%. To follow this
up they then won both the Novice Open with 65.60% and the Novice Winter
Qualifier with 71.92% at Port Royal. Truly consistent!
JUNE
Martel, a four year old ridden by Rachel Holden qualified for the Burghley Young Event Horse Championships at Bramham Horse Trials on 12th June.
Margaux, out of our BWBS Champion Mare, Morka, has been winning this summer
for new rider Kate Johnson. 1st and 2nd in Novice classes at
Fry's in Yorkshire and 1st and 2nd again in Novice classes at Willerby.
MAY
Red Baron has been sold to Peter Hannigan in Ireland and now being ridden by David Hannigan. The new partnership has got off to a great start, winning the CIC* at Ballindenisk International and the Tredstep Junior Rider Series CNCJ* class at Kilmanahan, Co. Kilkenny.
Kate McClaren has also been sold to England and now being ridden by JRN 2008 Northern Team member Laura Ritchie-Bland. This partnership are also off to a flying start with a super win in a Novice Section on their dressage score of 29.5 at the Central Scottish event.
Macho (Remember Me) won the Derby House Young Dressage Horse qualifier at Sheepgate over the bank holiday and was also 3rd in the Shearwater Potential International Dressage Horse Qualifier. He has now qualified for all the Young Horse Championships for 2009 - congratulations!
Vanessa Walker and Ravendale Stud's lusitano stallion, Pingalim were also winners at Sheepgate of the Advanced Medium Summer Regional Qualifier.
Para rider Alex McNamara won a Novice and was second in the other Novice at Sheepgate with 6 yr old Morocan Bound.
Y Matilda has a new relation who is apparently very similar looking. Let's hope she takes after her in talent as well as looks,Y Matilda having just won her first Medium qualifier at Laughton Manor, Lincs. as well as a string of recent Elementary's.
April
Y Matilda Wins Elementry Dressage Summer Qualifier with 69.66% at Arkenfield
Macho (Bred by Ravendale Stud) Congratulations to Antonia Brown and Macho who were winners of a Novice class with 71% (April 20) and qualified for the Shearwater National Championships.
Foal News a black filly has arrived to Donnerleska, just like her big sister Merinka, Elora Dana has also had a filly, dark bay just like her and "Tina" a first time mum this year has produced a striking colt with a lovely blaze. Hope your foalings are going smoothly this season and do let us know how you get on.
